The coming week is a vital one for all five league teams, with a game almost every day from Monday to Saturday!
The Ennis start off on Monday with a trip to Meath (!), needing a decent win to keep up the pressure on second-placed Drogheda, who host plummeting Kilkenny on Saturday. Kilkenny had been outsiders for promotion, but two successive 5-1 defeats now see them in the bottom half! They’ll need to regain their form fairly quickly if we’re to go up…
On Tuesday, the Armstrong travel to Kildare to play bottom-of-the-table Celbridge. Another 7½-½ win is unlikely, but the last round of games has brought us to within touching distance of reigning champions Kilkenny – it’d be a good season if we could nick fifth place off them.
On Wednesday, the Bodley A are in action at home against Inchicore; while we’re 4½ points off promotion, Inchicore are only 2 points adrift, and every point we earn will benefit our own B team. To try strengthen our team and help our Bs out, we’ve a new player lined up for his leagues debut; more on that on Wednesday!
Thursday is the BA’s turn – an absolutely crucial top-of-the-table clash against Rathmines A about which it mayn’t be an exaggeration to say that winner takes all. We have a two-point lead over Rathmines, while on the final day, we face Rathmines B while Rathmines A face relegation candidates Ballinasloe B. A win against the As would extend our lead to at least 3 points and all but ensure promotion. A defeat would reduce our lead to at most 1 point – if not wipe it out entirely – and we could be in for a very nervous final day.
Finally, Saturday sees the only country game of the week – curious that, with fixtures in Meath and Kildare, the only country game is in Dublin! Our Bodley B travel to Balbriggan, who’ll be playing their final game of the season and looking to seal the title, while we’ll be looking for every point possible in the final push for second place. On the same day, second play fourth as Rathmines Juniors host Cavan.
So while things are still up in the air at the moment, we really should know a lot more about what the season holds in store by this time next week. Best of luck to all teams!
