The club’s annual Christmas charity handicap blitz takes place this Wednesday.
Given events of the past week, the tournament really does promise to be more competitive than ever before. The new January ratings list will decide handicaps, which range, as ever, from 8 minutes against two for rating differences greater than 250 points down to 5 v 5 for those within 50 points.
Despite the handicap, the last two finals have been contested by 2000+ players, but the advantage of the handicap system is that it allows upsets like 2010, when Thomas Hurley reached the final, knocking out Conor O’Donnell, Sam Osborne and David Murray en route. Will any of our current crop of young players – or indeed, those from Rathmines Juniors, who are taking the night off to attend en masse as they did last year – cause a similar stir this time around? Or will the experienced heads prevail?
Entry is E6 unwaged and E10 for waged. As all proceeds are going to charity, extra donations are always welcome. There’ll be plenty of spot prizes as well. Registration is from 7:15, and we’ll be hoping to get underway by 8. We’re usually ok for boards, but extra clocks are always welcome! Most players should be guaranteed seven games, unless they end up in the late-comers group, which is usually a smaller group.
