The Bodley A came good last night with a resounding 4½-½ win over Naomh Barróg A.
Luke Hayden was first to finish, winning a piece early on and converting with ease. Mihailo used 55 minutes compared to his opponent’s 5 to reach an inferior rook ending, and used his last few minutes to convert it to a win. Jamie rustled up an early attack which he converted to the full point to move to within one point of a board prize, while Anastasija also won to make it 4-0.
That just left Finn, playing board 3 but against their highest-rated player and one whose only defeat in the leagues this season has been against Round Tower. The game went nearly the full distance, but in a level endgame, a draw was agreed.
The result was by far our biggest win of the season and makes for a tense finish to the season. We’re now two points clear of Blanchardstown A, while there’s suddenly a big gap back to the rest (Naomh Barróg are 5 points adrift, while Curragh are 2½ points further back with a match in hand). We play Round Tower on the last day, so if we’re to seal third, it’ll have to be done next week…in Blanchardstown. A 4-1 win would mathematically seal third place, although we know already that that’s a daunting task given our earlier 3-2 defeat to the same side. Still, it’s in our own hands!
