After the highs of the first four rounds, Sunday was a bit of a come-down in the City of Dublin, but the overall weekend was still quite satisfactory from a Benildus point of view.
In the Juniors, Anastasija beat brother Mihailo – as she did in last year’s tournament – on Saturday evening to move to 4/4. It seems the effort both put into the game drained both for the Sunday; they picked up 1/4 between them, with both ending on 4/6 and actually being passed out by Desmond Beatty, who won his last three matches to finish on 4½/6, just half a point off the winners. Five players finished joint first on 5/6; had Anastasija won either of her final two games, she’d have been in there as well – but there’s always next time…
In the Challengers, Dylan and Odhrán were also a point off the title, both ending on 4/6. Odhrán’s result was actually 3½/4, given he had taken byes in rounds 2 and 3; Dylan was on 4/5 going into the last round and so also in with a shout of title success. Dylan did pick up a grading prize, and both players could be over 1300 when the new ratings list comes out, supposedly in the next week or so.
In the Major, Mariusz had an interesting day. After a draw with John Loughran, he was down to play a Brazilian player in the final round – his opponent turned up, looked at the draw, decided he didn’t like what he saw and left without saying a word! Ross came into the morning on 1½/4; I haven’t heard how his last two games went.
