In the club’s seventh win in a row(!), the Armstrong recorded a 6.5-1.5 win over 3rd placed Bray last night. Bray were missing a number of regulars, but we’ll take a bit of luck after a rocky start.
First blood went to Kevin McHugh, who quickly converted a winning knight ending. He was followed by John Gibson; I didn’t see the finish here, but John had earlier flung his f-pawn forward to spearhead a kingside attack which I presume paid dividends. On boards 5 and 6, Brendan and my opponents had both forced the queens off early (had they heard something, I wonder?!) but both of us managed to get minor pieces in at the opposing king.
Dave Willow completed the rout on the lower boards, while Zdravko bemoaned his risk-adverse play failing to make anything of strange opening play from his opponent. He settled for a draw. On 2, Gerry Finished his game in style, winning an exchange before mopping up even as his time ran precariously low. Time trouble wasn’t so generous to Mel, who fought hard in a complex endgame but ultimately went wrong under time pressure.
