Frank Scott took in a new venue at the weekend with a first organised trip to the Cork weekender.
In the Major, Alex Byrne broke 1400 with a solid weekend’s work which included that curious Benildus rite of passage – a loss to Paddy Divilly. Still, 3½ was enough for 12 points – his lowest ever tournament ratings gain! Hardly the last though.
In the Minor, William and Liam top scored, also on 3½. Liam was the biggest ratings gainer in the whole tournament, up 164, though it should have been about 45 more. With time running out to catch the train back to Dublin, himself and William were forced to give up draws in their final round games. Apparently William was a bit better, but Liam was four pawns up and sailing. Still, the points will come if the performances keep coming.
Cal was next on 3 (up 43), while both Richard (2½) and Declan (2) saw drops.
Next on the calendar is the Irish Junior Championships in Ballinasloe, followed by Malahide (incorporating the Leinster Championships) in May.
