The last round of the leagues started early due to the clash with the Irish Junior Championships, with the Heidenfeld recording a win and a defeat against Malahide last night.
Sending Desmond in to bat alongside son Ross was maybe a bit of a gamble in such a crucial game, but it paid off spectacularly when Desmond – nearly 500 points outrated on board 7 – got two rooks onto the seventh, pinned a knight with a bishop and won from there. Desmond ends the season with 2½/3 for the Heidenfeld; a fairly impressive result – he’s scored the same number of points for the O’Hanlon as for us!
On board 2, Ross was up against a new player (after round 9 anyway), meaning the Malahide team is likely to be one of the strongest they’ve put out all season. This one went right down to the wire, but after 3 3/4 hours, Ross finally fell in a K+1 each ending.
However, the point is just what we needed to settle nerves ahead of the final day. We’re technically not yet safe, but we now just need 2½ points either for us or for Bray (against Naomh Barróg) to be safe. We may even be able to enjoy this final round!
