Next Wednesday is about the first night with no league or club championship matches on all season – so we’re going to bring back the thematic blitz.
For the first blitz of 2015, the opening will be the Panov-Botvinnik Attack – 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. ed cd 4. c4
The opening usually ends up with white having an isolated queen’s pawn (IQP) after a capture in the centre. Whole books have been written about how to play with and against the IQP – if you don’t have time for that, here’s a quick summary on wikipedia of the main themes. The best way to improve, of course, is to play a few games, so that’s the plan for Wednesday. As usual, we’ll be starting shortly after 8, games will be seven minutes each and there’ll be five rounds.
