In which the O’Sullivan made it 9 from 9 against Skerries (kind of!), Pawel got off the mark and the Bodley A continue to stumble towards promotion.
The Irish Junior Championships will take place from the 10th to the 12th of April in the Carlton Hotel in Blanchardstown. The tournament flyer is available for download here.
There was good news for both Bodley sides as our Bs went down to a narrow defeat against promotion-chasing Curragh.
The Heidenfeld – outrated on seven of eight boards – scrambled to the narrowest of defeats against Malahide on Wednesday, but the promotion race then took another twist when Inchicore A could only score the narrowest of victories against relegation-doomed Phibsboro.
The team travelled with 5 so were 1 down at the start. Eddie was first out of the block on 3 with a win around the hour mark. Next to finish was Desmond, sub on 5. Having broken into enemy territory with his Q to go +2p with clear winning chances, he decided to take time out to 0-0 and failed to spot a Q trap. Getting a R+p in exchange, he gratefully accepted the proffered draw a few short moves later. Dylan on 1 was in a very sharp game. Saccing a N to open up a weakly-defended K, he failed to spot a killer d4 that blocked the mate-supporting b2 Bishop. He went a R down but, with lots of activity around his opponent’s K, was able to secure a win. Anastasija on 4 was under some pressure from advanced pieces and a p pressing on her K-side and it was not clear could she hold out. However, in making the attempted assault, she ended up material with her K still safe and went on to close out. That left Odhran on 2 as black in a french exchange. Entering a Q+N+6 ending, this played out to Q+5 vs Q+4 with 2 passers for Odhran which he duly closed out with about 5 mins left on each clock. So 0.5-4.5 on the night for 1.5-4.5.
Conor O’Donnell retained the St Benildus Charity Blitz on an evening where 49 players raised close on €700 for the Simon Community and the Samaritans.
