St Benildus couldn’t quite make it two wins in a row in the O’Connell Cup at the weekend.
A 4-0 defeat in our opening game – with the first defeat coming after three minutes with a queen and bishop pointing at f7 – was an indication that we weren’t going to do quite as well as last year! We recovered to win the next game 3-1, but could only collect 1½ points in the last three matches – the draw a stalemate when a pawn was being pushed to promotion! – to finish fifth of six teams.
Liam was top scorer with 2/5 on board 3. Stephen picked up 1½/5 on 4, Daniel scored 1/5 on board 1 and Seán was a bit unlucky to draw a blank on board 2 – he was a rook up in his last game only to walk into back-rank mate…
Still, for a team with one league game between them, the weekend was more about getting some competitive games – and getting some basic mistakes out of the system for good! 🙂 – rather than winning outright. Next task is to build on the weekend’s performances!
