St Benildus lead the way as the Irish Senior Championships approach half-way – but there’s other more interesting Benildus performers!
Stephen Brady FM is outright leader on 3½/4, having beaten Philip Short FM and drawn with Stephen Jessel FM. In today’s round 5, he takes on top seed, David Fitzsimons FM.
In round 2, he beat Dylan, who was on 1/1 after getting a bye in the first round. Since then, though, Dylan has drawn with Anthony Fox and beaten former Benildus pupil John Kennedy, both times with black, to reach 2½/4 – his round 5 reward is the white pieces against Colm Daly FM.
The other FM in the field is Conor O’Donnell FM, who gave up a draw against Gerry yesterday; Gerry has managed to avoid any upsets so far, having beaten Paul Seán O’Neill and Tom O’Gorman in previous rounds to stand on 2½/4.

In the Irish Intermediate, meanwhile, Ross was best of the four Benildus players, though all had average enough tournaments. Ross’ 3/5 was enough for a 40 point gain. Mihailo and Anastasija broke even; Anastasija started with a draw against the top seed and ended with a defeat against the second seed, Mariusz, while Mihailo beat his two highest-rated opponents and lost to the other three! Mariusz was beaten in an endgame in the first round against Alex Byrne, and also lost to the top seed before recovering with two final wins to end on 2½/5.
