The BEA won 4-1 for the second time in a fortnight to go second in the table.
A weakened Phibsboro side had two subs, and only four players, which gave us an immediate 1-0 advantage. Seán picked up a couple of pawns and took victory – his fifth in five games this season – thanks to a mate threat on g2 coupled with a huge passed pawn. Luke and Aodhán, meanwhile, had relatively few problems against two 800s. On board 2, Nicky was the only player out-rated – by 100 points – and the gap told as she got squeezed out of the point; a black knight on c3 supported by a protected passed pawn on b4 and attacking a loose white pawn on a4 never looks good! Still, if we can keep racking up the 4-1 wins, it’ll be a good season!
Dublin may overtake us in the second promotion slot if they managed a 2-3 defeat against Finglas or better, while Naomh Barróg are level with us on 12 points. However, there’s then only one further team, Curragh, within 3 points, meaning all three sides promoted from the Bodley last season are in the top half of the table after four rounds.
There’s one further game before the Christmas, away to Rathmines.
