The club’s last two league trips to Enniscorthy have seen us lose 5-0 each time – so it was in a way appropriate that the first Enniscorthy Congress should end with a 5-0 win for Benildus!
It was also a case of deja vu for the club as, for the second week in a row, the third seed stormed the middle section to be on board 1 by round 3, and ultimately win the tournament with a round to spare, agreeing a 14-move draw as black in the final round. This time, Ross took victory in each of his first five games, the latter three of which were on the live boards. When a nice attack culminated in Ross spurning a free rook to instead go for (and deliver) mate against the second seed, he was a point clear of second placed Dean Copeland, who was showing his performance in Gonzaga was no one-off. A quick draw was agreed in the final round as the players stayed in the top two spots.
Mariusz was the club’s only other entrant over the weekend – he had a frustrating tournament in which he came a cropper in time trouble more than once. After a travelling bye in the first round, he picked up two wins, two losses on time and had to settle for a draw in the final round when a piece for pawn up – but it was only accepted at the fourth time of asking!
