The O’Hanlon put some distance between themselves and the drop zone when following up their recent 4-2 win over Elm Mount with an excellent 3-3 draw in Gorey.
The match postponed from last week due to the clash with the Leinster Schools Finals, and with Gorey only able to move 5 boards, which is about as many as we can generally field for away games anyway, we decided to make things easy and just scratch 6 from the outset.
Gorey are challenging for promotion, with a 2000+ on board 1, so we were hoping to scrape two points out of the match somewhere. Eddie did go down to defeat on 1, but a great performance saw us go unbeaten on the other four boards. Odhrán and Seán both beat 1400s – Seán is now on 9½/10 for the season – while Finn and Nicky picked up good draws on 4 and 5 to secure a draw overall.
The rest of round 9 won’t be completed for a couple of weeks yet, but despite Bray also starting a surge with two wins in a row in rounds 8 and 9, we have a 3½ point gap to the drop, with games against bottom-half sides to finish our campaign, where we can hopefully pick up a solid score to confirm another Houdini season!
