Odhrán had earlier said he’d rather lose his match with Paddy than miss the second half of Belgium v Wales, but with five minutes to half-time, Paddy had managed the e5 break in a QGD-type position and had simply equalised. By half-time, the game was over; I had presumed Odhrán had offered a draw, but it turned out instead that, straight after the e5 break, Paddy castled – which cost a piece in a tactic. Paddy could have played on, but both agreed instead to call it a day and watch the rest of the match instead.
So that leaves our second round draw as –

The relative lack of upsets in the first round has set up some big ties in round 2, three of which have been played in the club championships before – and unlike our first round re-matches, this time, the higher-rated player won each time. Ciarán v Gerry is a repeat of the title decider from 2014, which Gerry won (of course!). Anastasija v Ross is prep for both players ahead of the Glorney the week after, and was also played in our 2014 tournament, with Ross coming out on top en route to a runner’s-up spot. And last year, Mariusz beat Aodhán in a fairly wild match in the fourth round. This is also one of three matches which can take the lead in the David v Goliath prize – Paddy and Frank are the other two who, along with last year’s winner, could take over the running.
We’ll be underway at 7:30 next week.
