Thomas and Lorcan took their international bows in a 10 minute blitz tournament – II Torneo de Ajedrez Infantil “El Rincon” in Zaragoza, Spain on Sunday. The 2008 section was 22 strong but had 8 rounds, which those of you who have run tournaments will know can lead to some interesting draw results. So it was that Lorcan in Round 7 on 3½ points played the tournament leader on 5½. Despite losing that game, Lorcan won in Round 8 and finished 6th on 4½, including a first-round win over the top seed, rated 1269.
Thomas’ 2006 tournament only had nine so turned into an all-play-all. Going well on 3/3 and in a winning end-game in Round 4, he fell foul of the local rule that if you play two illegal moves in a game you forfeit. Having learned his lesson from that loss in Round 4, he promptly forfeited Round 5 by playing two illegal moves before move 15. Things improved from there with a draw against a 1206 and a win against a 1500, leaving him 5th but just one point short of overall victory… Still, with no losses over the board and a renewed determination not to play too many illegal moves, a good morning’s work was achieved.
