Benildus’ summer of chess holidays has continued into the autumn with Mariusz playing the Riga Technical University Open alongside a couple more familiar names.
He’s had a curious draw so far – after an opening-round draw against the second-bottom seed, a 10-year-old rated 1397, he was up against a 1779 in round 2, aged 80. After another draw – having been better in both games; +2.5 and +1.6 respectively, says Fritz – you’d expect a slightly easier game in round 3, but instead he faces a 16-year-old rated 2040 later this evening.
Fourth seed in the section is Mariusz’ dad Anatol, who of course played a simo in Benildus a couple of years ago. And in the larger A group, there’s three other Irish players in action – Gonzaga’s Killian Delaney and David Murray, and Stephen Moran from Trinity.
All told, 396 players are in aciton across four sections, while Alexei Shirov GM has signed up for the blitz, which will surely be interesting! You can keep track of Mariusz’ score here.
