The Heidenfeld underlined their claim as early promotion favourites when recording a big 6-2 win in Celbridge, despite missing half a team.
Despite missing Dave Willow, myself, Dylan and Michael – and having had to go down to the O’Hanlon B for subs to fill the team – we did travel with Ciarán R on board 7, compared to the board 1 slot he occupied when the teams last met two years ago, while Mariusz and Ross, the only other players to have played both matches, have since gained around 400 points between them.
Taking a 1-0 lead into the match from John’s win at home on the Wednesday, we saw out the match unbeaten. Tim, Ross and both Ciaráns all drew – Ciarán R after an 86-move marathon which, with increments, isn’t what you want for an away country match on a Friday night! However, there were wins for Mariusz, new signing Constantin and sub William, which puts us nicely atop the formative league table ahead of this week’s match against our old friends, newly-promoted Drogheda, who had a big win of their own in round 1 against Phibsboro –
The plan at present is for half that match to take place up the club on Wednesday, with the other half on Saturday.
