There’s three competitions coming up in January for those who fancy a break from promotion pushes…
The Leinster Juniors are on in the Esplanade in Bray from the 1st to the 4th of Jan – online entry closes tonight. There’s six sections from U-10s (of which Ben Murray is the outgoing champion) up to U-19s, and you can enter as many as you can play in for the same flat fee (€20). For those who have the choice, we recommend skipping the U-10s and U-11s and going straight in at the U-12s, which is a longer time control. You can enter and see the list of current entrants here.
The following week, the Mulcahy Cup is on in Cork. This one is an open – the top-seeded IM is currently down to play a 1400s, so there’s a definite chance of an unusually strong opponent. Again, online entry is here, still with discounted entry, and anyone thinking of entering should get in touch with the Beatties, who may also be entering.
Finally, the last weekend of January sees the Gonzaga Classic, a tournament we have had a very rich run of success in lately. It runs on a different grading structure to Bunratty/Kilkenny, allowing many players to play up a bit (so the usual 1200-1600 section is actually a 1200-1900 section here) We may be able to do a few lifts into this one over the weekend (similar to how Malahide worked) – more entries are to be encouraged as it’ll boost mu eventual winner’s cheque! Entry and entries are here.
