The O’Hanlon A picked up the minimum result they were looking for against title rivals Gorey at the weekend, though it came about in a way nobody could particularly have predicted.

Wins for the Armstrong, Heidenfeld, O’Hanlon B and – in one pre-played game – the O’Hanlon A saw the club victorious each time, and Gerry and Constantin have secured our first board prizes of the season.
A reminder that the 2017 charity blitz is this Wednesday, 15th March! Entries from 7:30-ish; aiming to get underway at 8pm, with groups over by 9 and the final over by 10. Entry is €15 waged/€10 unwaged, with all proceeds to the Simon Community and the Samaritans.
The O’Hanlon A and Heidenfeld are still on course for a league double, but only after a bit of a scare along the way this week, while a new-look Bodley side picked up another couple of points to keep them in to mid-table obscurity.
The school’s senior team once again finished up runners-up to Gonzaga in the Leinster Schools Finals in Castleknock today.
The March Grand Prix event was cancelled amidst rumours of suspicious activity in various matches. For the moment, it is assumed that anything that did happen is probably a figment of your imagination.
Originally scheduled for Sat 11th, Gorey rang 12 days in advance to ask if we could reschedule one board to Sat 4th. Thanks to this early prompt, it was soon noted that 11th was a clash with BOTH the Leinster Schools Leagues finals – accounting for half the Benildus team and nearly all potential subs – and the Galway congress – accounting for a 4th player and a few more possible subs! So it was with thanks to Gorey for their flexibility, and not a little relief, that the team of 5 set out from the school on Tuesday 7th for the trip down the N11.
St Benildus will be back in Europe for the first time in more than 30 years after plotting a fortuituous draw through the National Club Championships to come second – and so will be able to send a team to the 2017 European Club Cup in Manavgat in Turkey this October.
There’s two blitz tournaments up the club in the next fortnight – but note the change of date!
This Wednesday, the 8th, will be round 3 of our Blitz Grand Prix, with Constantin and John currently leading the way. The following Wednesday, the 15th, will be our charity blitz. Registration starts from 7:15, entry is €15 adults and €10 other and the usual rules apply – groups of 8, entries capped at 64, lots of spot prizes and, of course, a handicap time control.
Note this the other way around from the way we had originally scheduled it, so do update your diaries!
