The March Grand Prix event was cancelled amidst rumours of suspicious activity in various matches. For the moment, it is assumed that anything that did happen is probably a figment of your imagination.
The tournament apparently started off with me hanging mate in one against Thomas Cooney while a piece and pawn up, and further suspicions were raised when Mihailo also hung mate in one against Thomas in round 3 when four pawns up. This put Thomas on board 3 for round 4 – up against Seán – while Dave Willow was on the bottom board and I was allegedly busy hanging a rook to Felix to slump to 1/3. Things got weirder in round 4 as I wound up with two knights and several pawns against David Dooley’s couple of pawns, and so promoted to a bishop, sacced one of my knights and tried my first competitive bishop and knight mate, which went well, despite David defending as well as he possibly could. And confirmation that the whole event was clearly fictitious came in round 5, when Mihailo beat me.
That said, Constantin won again, so maybe we should assume it was real. If so, the final table was as follows –
And that leaves us looking like this after three rounds –
The colours indicate the four grading bands (with red being the top one, and so having no grading prize on offer)
The grand prix resumes on 12th April. Bring witnesses!
