The top seed will once again have white in the first round of the club championships after one of my 50/50 chances came unstuck at the first hurdle.
With Portugal and Chile going into extra time in the first, dull, semi-final of the Confed Cup, the bet was settled with the minimum of excitement. 2014’s bet was also settled as early as possible – the top seed would have white if any of the final round of World Cup group games saw five goals or more, and the first match, Brazil v Cameroon, ended 4-1. 2015’s bet was settled quite late, as Germany missed a penalty and didn’t get the required 7 against Gibraltar until the 81st minute. 2016’s target was met later still, but it was still met when Robbie Brady’s 86th minute winner against Italy saw Ireland through to the last 16 of the Euros.
Next year, the top seed gets white if Benildus win the European Cup in Turkey this October.
