The Killane have picked up a second win from two group games, but are curiously in danger of exiting the tournament at the group stage.
After scrambling to get a full team together, the side travelled to Kildare with just two of the team that had won the opening match against Rathmines. Both of those – Ciarán and Eddie – ended up winning, while Anastasija also chipped in with the decisive point from a rook up. Finn drew, while Seán and Frank Kelly both lost as we won 3½-2½, a second win in a row against an Ennis team, which is encouraging ahead of next season.
However, the group is complicated by the fact that Gonzaga scratched against Curragh, who now lead the group despite having lost both their matches! They have 9½ points at present, including their 6-0 “win” over Gonzaga; we’re on 7½, with Rathmines on 7 and Gonzaga on 0, but the runaway Ennis champions have yet to play Rathmines and us. We host Gonzaga next week, with two points required to guarantee semi-final progression.
