The Killane have made it through to the semi-finals after a narrow defeat against Gonzaga last night.
In a much-delayed group match, we were given a good start with the news that Gonzaga had dropped two points against Rathmines, and only had five players against us, meaning that all we needed was just one more point from the night to be sure of a semi-final spot. With us out-rated on all five matches, it wasn’t entirely sure where that point was going to come from. Eddie was finished with customary speed, but with no magic point, as he went down to defeat. The other four games all went down to the wire, however, and Odhrán and Aodhán drew within moments of each other to take us over the line. Odhrán had R+2 v R+1 which was probably a draw from the outset, and certainly was once it was reduced to sole pawn against well-placed king. Aodhán’s game was similar, with him saccing a minor piece to reach a dead drawn N v 2P ending which offered no hope of victory for either side.
That left just the two Ciaráns on the top two boards, with decent looking positions for black in each case. Ciarán M, with white on 2, went down to defeat, but Ciarán R held a draw against John McMorrow as we went down 3½-2½.
All that’s left to be decided now is whether we win the group or come second; the league table currently is –
St Benildus 3-10
Elm Mount and Skerries have qualified from the other group.
