There was a huge turnout for the first blitz grand prix of the new year, and although the winner was, not surprisingly, one of the two senior Irish internationals playing in the tournament, at the end of the evening, each of the 33 players is in joint first in the standings.
With so many players, it’s pretty much impossible to make any sort of report of how the evening went other than to note that there was a significant amount of extra chairs in the geography room by the end of the evening!
There were apparently four upsets in the first round, although Fearghal beating Ciarán (on time) is the only one I heard about. Lorcan started off with a game against dad Brendan, and ended up in round 6 facing brother Thomas. Kavin was on board 1 in the final round, although by then Stephen – his opponent – had the tournament wrapped up, having already beaten three-time reigning champion Dylan. Gerry finished fourth, only his second time outside the top two in five appearances.
The full results are below. The grading bands are just indicative so far – they exact bands will be decided in advance of round 4 (in April) based on the ratings at the time, and the total number of people who’ve played at that time; the grading bands will be quartiles (with no prize for the top quartile of course!)
In terms of the current standings though, everyone’s worst result is discarded, and that means that technically everyone is still on zero! Tie-break though is the number of first places achieved, so technically Stephen is in the lead at present, with everyone down as far as Thomas finishing in the points.
Round 2 is set for 27th February. With everyone still on 0 points, there’s still plenty of time to get involved!
