Frank Scott Shield

At the AGM last week, it was agreed to use Tornelo for this year’s Frank Scott Shield. This is the platform used by the ICU for some of its recent junior tournaments and apparently gives more of a tournamenty feel than stand-alone lichess games. The tournament has been created here and the lobby is open if people want to join up. It’s no harm joining now to see if there’s any errors rather than finding out at 6:55 on the day of the first round!

The first round is Wednesday 7th October at the earlier-than-usual time of 7pm. Time control is the usual 60 + 15. The current entry list is here. The tournament will run for five successive Wednesdays until the final round on Wednesday 4th November.

The weekly club blitz will move to Mondays at 8 for the duration of the Frank Scott Shield.

Finally, while it is the time of the year for the new season’s club fees, we have agreed to hold off on these until we see what the club can actually do this season. Obviously while Dublin remains under Level 3, the club can’t re-open.

William beats FM!

William had a good online win this week against a 12-year-old Canadian FM who this summer had made headlines by beating a GM in 12 moves.   Anthony Atanasov beat Fabien Libiszewski in spectacular fashion in June – you can watch it here.   He has also beaten Nakamura and Giri online, but now has lost to William.

4NCL update

For the second week in a row, our five 4NCL Online teams picked up four wins, and our D team are now top of Division 6 on tie-break.

Club AGM on Wednesday

A reminder to all that the club’s AGM is on this Wednesday at 8pm via Zoom.   Drop me a line for the link.   The papers – accounts, minutes, etc – will be available on the day.   This AGM will in particular be looking at how the club operates under covid, so the more the merrier for this one!

Better week in 4NCL

After a tough start to the new 4NCL Online season – where two of our five sides picked a mere half point between them – round 2 was much more productive, with our five teams recording four match wins and a narrow defeat against a fully-titled side.

Frank Scott Shield 2020

We’re now taking entries for the 2020 Frank Scott Shield.   At present, restrictions mean the club can’t open, but if there is enough interest, we would be able to host the tournament on lichess with the usual time control (60+15).   The club AGM on Wednesday week will discuss and agree the best format for the tournament – it may be that games (except the final round) could be played at any mutually convenient time over the week, and not necessarily Wednesday at 7:30. The current entry list is below.

For the moment though, we’ll see who’s interested, agree something at the AGM, and the tournament won’t start until the first week of October at the earliest.

Club AGM date set

The club’s AGM will be on Wednesday 23rd September at 8pm.

The AGM will be on Zoom and the link is available to all paid-up club members on request.   The agenda will follow the usual items (President’s Address, Secretary’s Address, Treasurer’s Address) followed by an AOB item which will effectively cover how the 2020/21 season works in terms of re-opening the club, league fees, and the regular events (in particular, the Frank Scott Shield which would be due to start later this month)
